Support Passage of the Kigali Amendment
The most potent greenhouse gases are hydrofluorocarbons, which are most commonly found in cooling systems. To address these pollutants, nations introduced the Kigali Amendment to the 1987 Montreal Protocol. This amendment requires countries to phase down these greenhouse gases, which are hundreds to thousands of times more powerful than carbon dioxide, by 85 percent over the next 15 years. On Tuesday, November 16, President Biden sent the Kigali Amendment to the Senate for them to ratify. Like all treaties, it will need to win the approval of a two-thirds supermajority in the Senate to become law. Many countries have already approved the Kigali Amendment, including China and members of the European Union.
CCL's mission is to create the political will for climate change solutions. The Kigali amendment is a necessary part of the solution set, so please take action by reaching out to your senators to ask them to ratify this treaty.
