We have the technology - what we need is the political will
The time for debate has passed. We know what must be done to solve the climate crisis, and we have the technology to do so. These solutions offer a win-win for people, the global economy, the environment, and our planet. These solutions can even benefit companies with roots deeply embedded in fossil fuel, as suggested by Jamie Beard of GEO at the University of Texas.
Kingsmill Bond of Carbon Tracker argues that we have or will have the technologies to go net-zero in carbon. He also argues that if the US is to remain a superpower it must "embrace superior, cheaper technologies."
"The cost of transition, just in purely financial terms, is cheaper than the cost of business as usual, and as many others have pointed out, technically all of this stuff is completely feasible. But you do need very powerful political action to break through the logjams of the incumbents and the inertia of the current system. I salute Biden and his team because that seems to be exactly what they are trying to do. "
A price on carbon will allow a broad and deep focus on carbon-reducing solutions across the globe. It will spur the adoption of green technology and even more innovations in the space.
Let’s act to inspire the political will for meaningful climate action.
